Skitouring to 3,000 metres peaks at Pitztal Glacier

Not all ski tours to the surrounding 3,000-metre peaks of the Pitztal Glacier ski area start at Rifflsee. Last but not least, we would like to introduce you to two ski touring routes that have a different starting point. And one thing beforehand: You should only choose these routes in open terrain, if you are experienced in ski touring.

Skitour to the Wildspitze in Pitztal

A very special ski tour destination is the Wildspitze, the highest mountain peak in Tyrol – a coveted destination for many summit strikers. The starting point for the 6-7 hour tour is the mountain station of the Mittelbergbahn (3,280 m). After a short descent to the Mittelbergjoch, the trail climbs steadily uphill, past the Bruchkogel and zigzags, keeping more to the left, directly to the Wildspitze. The descent follows the ascent path.

Linker Fernerkogel

A ski tour to the Linker Fernerkogel (3,277 m) is also an unforgettably beautiful experience. From the mountain station of the Gletscherexpress, the route leads to the valley station of the Mittelbergbahn, to the high-altitude cross-country ski trail and from there straight to the first steep step of the glacier tongue. Via the Tiefenbachjoch, the route leads steeply uphill to the Linker Fernerkogel. After the 2-hour, moderately difficult ascent, the descent follows the same route.

Starting point Rifflsee for skitouring in Pitztal

An incomparable glacier world awaits you in the Pitztal Glacier & Rifflsee ski area. If you don’t just want to marvel at the imposing mountain peaks from afar, you can also take the ski tour adventure directly onto one of the many glaciers – provided you are an experienced ski tourer. The Rifflsee is the perfect starting point for many ski tours to the surrounding 3,000-metre peaks:

  • Rostizkogel (3,394 m)
  • Schneidiges Wandle (3,357 m)
  • K2 (3,250 m)
  • Wurmtaler Kopf (3,225 m)
  • Wurmtaler Joch (3,089 m)
  • Rostizjoch (3,083 m)
  • Rotschliff Kogel (3,000 m)

With the cable cars on the Pitztal Glacier & Rifflsee you can reach the fascinating Rifflsee, Austria’s highest glacier lake (2,232 m), within a few minutes. From the mountain station of the Rifflsee cable car (2,300 m) you can choose one of these two high-alpine ski touring routes:

Skitour to the K2

A ski tour on the K2, the striking snow pyramid above the Rifflsee, enjoys great popularity among ambitious ski tourers. After skirting the Rifflsee, the route leads into the flat and wide Riffltal valley. Via the Mittlerer Löcherferner (2,900 m), the route goes straight up under the rock face of the Rositzkogel to K2. After the approximately 3-hour ascent, the descent to the Rifflsee is via the ascent route.

From Rifflsee to Rostizkogel

An equally gorgeous ski tour from the Rifflsee leads to the Rostizkogel. This scenic route is one of the most beautiful, but at the same time most demanding in the Rifflsee area. From the Rifflsee, the route leads into the lower Riffltal valley via the outlet of the Mittlerer Löcherferner glacier to the Nördlicher Löcherferner glacier on the beautifully shaped summit. After 3-3.5 hours you have reached your destination and are rewarded with a fantastic view. The descent is also on the same route as the ascent.

That's how you reach the starting point for your ski tours in Pitztal
